Amritsar, Jan 15 (NationPress) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is set to appear before the Akal Takht, the highest temporal authority for Sikhs, today for allegedly making derogatory comments on Sikh tenets.
He will miss the Golden Jubilee Convention of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) in Amritsar, which will be attended by President Droupadi Murmu, due to this appearance.
CM Mann becomes the third Chief Minister to be summoned by the Akal Takht, following Parkash Singh Badal and Surjit Singh Barnala. Badal was called in 1979 by the then jathedar Sadhu Singh Bhaura for his involvement in the Sikh-Nirankari clash that resulted in 13 deaths in Amritsar. Barnala was declared tankhaiya (guilty of religious misconduct) in 1986 and faced excommunication for ordering police action inside the Golden Temple, later seeking atonement in 1988.
Just a day prior, CM Mann clarified his intentions regarding his appearance before Akal Takht Sahib, affirming he would present himself with utmost humility.
Regarding the timing of the meeting, the Chief Minister stated there has been no official communication indicating any changes and emphasized that the day “is entirely devoted to Sri Akal Takht Sahib, whose directives are paramount and will be adhered to both in letter and spirit.”
In his statement, CM Mann remarked, “I shall approach Sri Akal Takht Sahib as a devoted Sikh, and there is no question of requesting a time alteration.”
He reiterated that January 15 is wholly reserved for Akal Takht Sahib per the instructions from the Jathedar, and he has no other commitments on that day.
“I have even communicated with the office of the President of India regarding my inability to attend her event on that date, as January 15 is exclusively for my appearance before Sri Akal Takht Sahib,” he mentioned.
The Chief Minister emphasized, “No official letter or statement from my office has sought any change in the timing.”
Highlighting the sanctity of the institution, he stated, “Sri Akal Takht Sahib is revered by every Sikh and stands as the highest temporal seat of our community.”
Reiterating his deep respect for the authority of the Takht, CM Mann said, “Any command from Sri Akal Takht Sahib-ji is to be accepted with full reverence and will be complied with.”
He concluded, “Sri Akal Takht Sahib-ji is paramount to me. Any directive from that sacred Takht will be observed in true spirit. The command of Sri Akal Takht Sahib-ji has always been, and will continue to be, supreme for me and my family.”
