Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, Jan 5 (NationPress) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced on Monday his intention to appear before the Sri Akal Takht Sahib as a modest and devoted Sikh, rather than in his capacity as Chief Minister.
CM Mann expressed on X that, "Sri Akal Takht Sahib holds great significance for every Sikh and is regarded as the paramount temporal authority of our community."
He further stated, "Any directive from Sri Akal Takht Sahib Ji will be received with utmost respect and adhered to. I will approach Sri Akal Takht Sahib barefoot, embodying the humility of a Sikh, not as a Chief Minister."
Despite the President's upcoming visit to Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar for a conference, Mann reiterated his commitment to visiting Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
He firmly declared, "For me, Sri Akal Takht Sahib Ji surpasses all else, and every command from it should be followed sincerely. The orders from this revered Takht have been, are, and will forever remain supreme for me and my family."
On January 15, Akal Takht Jathedar Kuldip Singh Gargaj summoned CM Mann to explain his remarks about Sikh institutions that have offended the community's religious sentiments.
The Jathedar criticized Mann's actions in videos regarding Sikh Gurus and the late Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale as disrespectful and sacrilegious.
"You are hereby informed that while addressing a serious Panthic issue, you intentionally exhibited an anti-Sikh mentality by making highly objectionable statements against Sri Akal Takht Sahib's Sikh Rehat Maryada, its supreme authority, and the principle of dasvandh, Guru Ki Golak, as bestowed by Guru Sahiban, thus deeply hurting Sikh sentiments," stated the Akal Takht.
"Notably, some objectionable videos of you have recently emerged, depicting you engaging in questionable activities with images of Sikh Gurus and the revered national martyr of the 20th century, Sant Giani Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale."
"Following the directives of the esteemed Singh Sahib Jathedar Sri Akal Takht Sahib, you hold a constitutional office in Punjab, and your anti-Sikh remarks reflect a state of political arrogance," asserted the highest temporal seat of Sikhism.
The Jathedar noted that since CM Mann is a patit Sikh, or one who has cut his hair, he must submit a response to the Akal Takht Sahib Secretariat.
"As you are a patit and cannot be presented before the railing of Sri Akal Takht Sahib according to Sikh tradition, you are summoned to appear in person at the Secretariat of Sri Akal Takht Sahib on January 15, 2026, at 10 a.m. for clarification," he added.
In 2024, former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal was declared 'tankhaiya' for violating the Sikh religious code.
