Chandigarh, May 18 (NationPress) The President of Punjab Congress, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, on Sunday, called for a unified approach among all political parties to advocate for a special financial package from the Centre aimed at “rescuing” the state’s economy.
He urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to engage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding this crucial issue. Warring also appealed to other political entities to come together for the welfare of Punjab and compel the Central government to provide a “bailout package”.
This appeal follows state BJP chief Sunil Jakhar’s remarks on the urgent need for a dedicated economic package for Punjab, considering the historical and ongoing losses due to its status as a border state.
Jakhar made this statement during an all-party meeting in Chandigarh, which included the Governor, Chief Minister, and representatives from major political factions.
In his address, Congress President Warring pledged his party’s complete support in the quest for a special package for Punjab, which is in dire need of assistance. Representing Ludhiana in Parliament, he shared alarming reports from the industry, stating, “Under the current circumstances, survival for industry and trade in Punjab is becoming increasingly difficult.”
He emphasized that Punjab’s debt continues to escalate annually. “Let’s avoid blame games and tackle this issue collectively,” he urged the Chief Minister and fellow political factions, asserting that while it is primarily the government’s duty to safeguard the state’s economy, all must share in the repercussions.
Warring cautioned against the dire outcomes of an economic collapse, which could lead to significant unemployment and ensuing law and order challenges. He remarked that the government’s ongoing drug campaign would be futile if not paired with economic revitalization.
BJP leader Jakhar specifically suggested that Punjab should be granted special status similar to that of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, allowing for long-term economic and developmental advantages.
