Chandigarh, April 18 (NationPress) In a significant operation against narco-terrorism, the Punjab Police's State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) from Amritsar has dismantled a cross-border drug trafficking ring by apprehending two suspects, as stated by Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Saturday.
The authorities confiscated 64.62 kg of heroin from their possession.
The individuals arrested have been identified as Sarwan Singh, also known as Gujjar, from Awan Wasau village in Amritsar, and Shamsher Singh, known as Shera, from Dial Rangar village in Amritsar.
In addition to the substantial drug haul, law enforcement seized their vehicle, which was utilized for smuggling operations.
DGP Yadav indicated that preliminary investigations have uncovered connections between this module and smugglers operating out of Pakistan, as well as a handler based in Portugal. “This cross-border trafficking network has links to the infamous Pakistan-based smuggler Moosa, whose name was associated with a prior case involving a recovery of 532 kg of heroin,” he explained.
Notably, Indian Customs officials previously made a record seizure of 532 kg of heroin at the Integrated Check Post (ICP) Attari in 2019.
The DGP confirmed that ongoing investigations aim to trace the broader network connected to this case.
Detailing the operation, AIG (Amritsar) Sukhminder Singh Mann reported that credible intelligence indicated that Sarwan Singh and Shamsher Singh had recently received a consignment of heroin, which was delivered via drone from across the border. He noted that, under their handlers' directions, the duo was on their way to distribute the drugs to another group.
Acting promptly, the Amritsar unit intercepted the suspects near the Mahal bypass in Amritsar, recovering 64.62 kg of heroin in the process.
The AIG further stated that the arrested individuals were promised substantial financial rewards by their handlers.
As the investigation continues, more arrests and drug recoveries are anticipated.
A case has been registered under Sections 21, 25, and 29 of the NDPS Act, as well as Sections 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29 of the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam in Amritsar.
