Rahul Mamkootathil Criticizes Kerala Government Amid Ganesh Kumar Controversy
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, March 9 (NationPress) The expelled Congress MLA, Rahul Mamkootathil, has fiercely criticized the Kerala government regarding the scandal linked to state Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar. He has raised concerns about the police's alleged inaction following a distress call made by the minister's wife.
In response to the claims made by Bindu Menon, Mamkootathil emphasized that the incident exemplifies the misuse of power within the state.
“A highly serious allegation has been presented by Bindu Menon, the wife of Minister Ganesh Kumar, indicating that her phone is being monitored. How could such an act occur? Isn’t this a serious offense and an obvious abuse of authority?” he questioned.
Rahul, who was expelled from the Congress party after facing three rape charges, drew a parallel between his own arrest and the alleged police inaction regarding the minister’s situation.
“I was apprehended by law enforcement after they surrounded the hotel I was in, based solely on a complaint. Yet in Ganesh Kumar's case, the victim herself reached out to 112, the emergency police helpline. Why was there no follow-up?” he probed.
He also mentioned that the minister’s wife had contacted Veena Vijayan.
“It’s important to note that the victim reached out to the Chief Minister’s daughter, Veena. Everyone is aware of her husband’s position as a Cabinet colleague of Ganesh Kumar,” Rahul stated.
The expelled MLA linked the ongoing controversy to what he termed political vengeance.
“This situation represents the consequences Ganesh Kumar faces for targeting two-time former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy,” he charged.
According to Bindu Menon, she had previously confronted the minister regarding women’s issues and had even blocked some of his staff's phone numbers. Menon recounted that the recent incident occurred when she quietly entered the bedroom at the Valakom residence, about 70 km from the state capital, and witnessed a scenario that prompted her to start taking photos.
She alleged that the minister’s driver attempted to stop her while some staff members tried to seize her phone.
“I lost my composure, but I neither assaulted anyone nor used foul language,” she emphasized, adding that the minister later depicted her as mentally unstable.
She mentioned informing her sister-in-law and reaching out to the police control room for assistance.
According to her account, she ran outside the house in distress, crying for help, just as the minister’s driver took the woman who was with the minister away in a vehicle.
Although police officers arrived at the scene, Bindu Menon alleged that they informed her that the matter did not fall under their jurisdiction.
She requested protection, only to be met with suggestions from some of the minister's staff to forgive him and resolve the issue amicably.
While she claims to possess photographic evidence, Menon clarified that she does not wish to take legal action or harm the minister or the government.
Veteran Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala remarked that everyone will now understand why former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had asked Ganesh Kumar to resign back in 2013.
“The minister must resign immediately, and CM Vijayan must take appropriate action, as three days have passed since the incident,” Chennithala insisted.
The state Cabinet is slated to convene its regular meeting on Tuesday, where CM Vijayan will need to decide on the necessary actions.
