Ranchi Police bust drug network, arrest six with ₹8.8 lakh cash
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ranchi Police on Tuesday busted a drug trafficking network operating in the Khet Mohalla-Bacha Kabristan area under the limits of the Hindpiri police station in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Six individuals, including one woman, were arrested, and narcotic substances along with over ₹8.8 lakh in cash were seized during the operation.
How the Operation Unfolded
Acting on a tip-off about large-scale trading of banned drugs in the Hindpiri area through local agents, the Senior Superintendent of Police constituted a special raiding team under Assistant Superintendent of Police (Kotwali) Nikhil Rai. Officers drawn from the Hindpiri, Kotwali, Daily Market, Lower Bazaar, and Women's Police Station formed part of the joint team.
When the team reached the Bacha Kabristan area, the suspects attempted to flee through narrow lanes. Police personnel swiftly cordoned off the locality and apprehended five youths in the chase.
Who Was Arrested
The five men arrested at the scene were identified as Sahil alias Charka, Mohammad Ejaz alias Babu, Awadhesh Yadav, Anil Kumar Mahto, and Sarvar Ansari. Brown sugar, ganja, and mobile phones were recovered from their possession.
Following sustained interrogation and disclosures made by the arrested men, police conducted a subsequent raid at a house near Nadi Ground belonging to Shehnaz Khatoon. A cash amount of ₹8,74,200 was recovered from her residence, along with two cartons of narcotic injections, four strips of banned tablets, ganja, and an electronic weighing machine used for drugs. Shehnaz Khatoon was arrested on the spot.
Total Seizures
In total, police seized ₹8,81,242 in cash, more than 6.8 grams of brown sugar, approximately 310 grams of ganja, and a large quantity of other narcotic medicines during the operation. The arrested individuals hail from various parts of Ranchi, including Hindpiri, Karbala Chowk, Kadru, and New Madhukam.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
All six accused were produced before a court on Tuesday and remanded to judicial custody. Police are continuing to investigate the wider network and are working to establish further links of the drug syndicate. This operation reflects a broader crackdown on narcotics distribution in urban pockets of Jharkhand, where local agents have increasingly been used to facilitate street-level drug sales.
