Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kabul, March 17 (NationPress) Afghanistan's cricket sensation Rashid Khan has denounced the reported civilian deaths resulting from recent airstrikes conducted by Pakistan in Kabul. He labeled the targeting of civilian facilities a “war crime” and called for international organizations to investigate the situation.
In a statement on X, the Afghan sports icon expressed profound sadness over the news that civilians were among those killed in the attacks, which local authorities claim struck a prominent addiction treatment hospital in the capital.
“I feel immense sorrow regarding the recent reports of civilian casualties due to Pakistani airstrikes in Kabul,” Khan stated. “Attacking civilian residences, schools, or medical facilities, whether deliberate or accidental, constitutes a war crime.”
He emphasized that the reported strikes occurring during the sacred month of Ramadan were especially troubling.
“The utter disregard for human life, particularly during Ramadan, is appalling and raises significant concerns. Such actions will only exacerbate division and animosity,” Khan remarked in his post.
The cricketer also urged global organizations to take decisive action and ensure accountability for the reported strike.
“I urge the UN and other human rights entities to conduct a thorough investigation into this recent atrocity and ensure those responsible are held accountable. I stand in solidarity with my fellow Afghans during this challenging time. We will heal, and we shall rise as a nation. Inshallah,” he added.
His comments follow reports from Taliban officials indicating that an airstrike late Monday impacted the 2,000-bed Umid addiction treatment hospital in Kabul. Authorities noted that hundreds of patients and civilians were likely present in the facility at the time of the attack.
According to officials from the Taliban-led government, the strike resulted in over 400 fatalities and left at least 250 individuals injured, although these numbers have yet to be independently verified.
The deputy spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate, Mullah Hamdullah Fitrat, stated that the bombing inflicted significant damage across the hospital complex, with health officials reporting severe destruction to many sections of the facility.
Rescue teams continued their search and recovery efforts throughout the night, as emergency responders worked diligently to assist the injured and recover victims from the wreckage.
