Guwahati, Nov 21 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized on Friday that a single ration card is evolving into a remarkable instrument for empowering women throughout the state, granting them access to a variety of welfare benefits and crucial support systems.

In a post shared on the social media platform X, CM Sarma pointed out that in Assam, a ration card has transcended its traditional role as merely a food security document; it now serves as a gateway to dignity, safety, and financial relief for mothers and sisters, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

"In Assam, a Ration Card can truly empower a woman. It provides benefits such as Rs 5 lakh Ayushman coverage, Orunodoi assistance, free rice, essential groceries, and subsidised cooking gas – one card, countless lifelines for our mothers and sisters," the Chief Minister stated.

He encapsulated the initiative with a powerful slogan: "One Ration Card. One Woman. Countless Benefits."

The state government has indicated that women who possess ration cards qualify for health insurance coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per family under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, significantly alleviating the financial strain of medical expenses on households.

Moreover, eligible women benefit from direct financial aid through the widely recognized Orunodoi scheme, which has emerged as one of the largest Direct Benefit Transfer programs in Assam.

This initiative primarily focuses on aiding widows, single mothers, elderly women, and individuals living below the poverty line.

Food security remains a pivotal aspect of the government's welfare initiatives.

Within the public distribution system, every beneficiary receives five kg of free rice each month.

Additionally, vital items such as one kg of masoor dal, sugar, and salt are available at subsidised prices to ensure families receive the necessary nutritional support.

Women beneficiaries are also being offered subsidised cooking gas connections, which reduce reliance on traditional fuel sources and promote cleaner, safer household environments.

Officials noted that connecting these schemes to the ration card has streamlined distribution, curbed leakages, and ensured that benefits reach the intended recipients without cumbersome bureaucratic obstacles.

The Chief Minister reiterated the state government's commitment to women-centric governance and inclusive growth, stating that empowering women at the grassroots is essential for developing a stronger and more self-sufficient Assam.
