Guwahati, Feb 24 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Tuesday that the BJP-led administration aims to transform 40 lakh women in the state into 'lakhpati'. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to enhance women's economic empowerment through consistent livelihood support.
During a cheque distribution event for women beneficiaries from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) at Bokajan in Karbi Anglong district, the Chief Minister emphasized that women empowerment is a cornerstone of the state government's development framework.
Sarma remarked that achieving financial independence for women is essential for bolstering families and propelling Assam's overall economic development.
He stated, “The BJP government is resolute in ensuring that at least 40 lakh women in Assam attain 'lakhpati' status. Through systematic support, financial aid, and skill enhancement, we are empowering women to achieve self-sufficiency.”
Highlighting successful government initiatives such as Orunodoi, the Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ASRLM), and various SHG-oriented programs, the Chief Minister noted that many women are already generating sustainable incomes through agriculture, animal husbandry, weaving, and small businesses.
Sarma indicated that the cheque distribution initiative aims to provide direct financial assistance to women entrepreneurs, enabling them to expand their ventures and enhance household incomes.
He stressed that the government is committed to ensuring transparency and direct benefit transfers so that aid reaches legitimate beneficiaries promptly.
The Chief Minister also mentioned ongoing efforts to establish an environment where women are not solely reliant on subsidies but are motivated to contribute to the economy.
“Our emphasis is on empowerment, not charity,” he stated. Sarma urged women beneficiaries to utilize the financial support effectively and assured them of ongoing government assistance in terms of training, market access, and credit facilities.
District administration senior officials, public representatives, and numerous women SHG members attended the event.
