Guwahati, Sep 3 (NationPress) In a remarkable step towards women’s empowerment, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled the innovative ‘Lakhpati Didi’ initiative on Wednesday. This programme, part of a broader national effort by the Ministry of Rural Development, seeks to assist women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in achieving a sustainable annual household income of Rs 1,00,000 or more.
During a special ceremony held at the Ramsarani Anchalik Panchayat, the Chief Minister distributed cheques to 7,474 SHG members. This financial support marks a significant step towards economic independence for these women. Many beneficiaries have already started transforming their lives through various small businesses and livelihood activities.
One of the beneficiaries, Purnima Das, who operates a small tailoring business, expressed her excitement about the support she received. She shared her aspirations to expand her business and hire local girls. “This financial aid is not just assistance; it’s about recognition. I feel empowered,” she stated.
Another beneficiary, engaged in the dairy business, conveyed her appreciation for the opportunity to grow her enterprise.
“I own cows and goats and sell milk in nearby markets. With this new financial support, I will be able to acquire more livestock and boost my income,” she shared.
Her story embodies the primary goal of the Lakhpati Didi initiative—helping women develop sustainable income sources. Another participant expressed her joy, noting they are receiving loans for various businesses such as farming, textiles, and purchasing sewing machines.
The initiative extends beyond mere financial help.
It integrates skill development, financial education, and business guidance to ensure long-term success. Women are encouraged to explore diverse livelihood activities, ranging from agriculture and animal husbandry to crafts and small-scale manufacturing.
“Being a Lakhpati Didi signifies more than just earning a lakh rupees; it’s about cultivating confidence, achieving financial independence, and gaining respect within the community,” remarked CM Sarma while addressing the audience. He reiterated the government’s dedication to fostering an environment where women-led SHGs can prosper.
