Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 9 (NationPress) A robot dressed in a saree greeted voters at a polling station during the Puducherry Assembly elections this Thursday, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). This initiative aims to enhance voter experience and engage younger voters through innovative technology.
The ECI shared a video on social media featuring the saree-clad robot, stating, "Welcome with flair! A robot is here to greet voters in #Puducherry!! It's a day of civic duty, let's head to the polls!"
The robot was observed holding a tray, with its red eyes scanning for incoming visitors while its roller feet allowed it to move freely.
This technological initiative by the ECI coincided with the voting day for Puducherry’s new 30-member Assembly, with results set to be announced on May 4.
Notably, the robot's debut happened during the visit of 43 delegates from 23 countries, including representatives from five foreign missions, as part of the first phase of the International Election Visitors’ Programme (IEVP) 2026.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar inaugurated the IEVP 2026 on Tuesday, facilitating foreign delegates to observe the Assembly elections across five States/UTs.
During the IEVP launch at the India International Institute for Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM), CEC Gyanesh Kumar described elections in India as celebrations of democracy, encouraging delegates to immerse themselves in the diverse experiences of the country.
The delegates received a demonstration of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at IIIDEM in Delhi, where they participated in a mock poll to experience the voting process firsthand.
Expressing great interest in India's election technology and administrative measures, the delegates engaged in an interactive session with experts to clarify their questions and learn more about the electoral process.
