Dubai, March 9 (NationPress) Indian captain Rohit Sharma addressed the criticisms he faced recently with a standout performance, earning the Player of the Match title in India's four-wicket triumph over New Zealand during the final of the 2025 Champions Trophy at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.
In pursuit of 252 runs, it was Rohit who showcased his prowess, striking seven boundaries and three sixes on his way to a quickfire 76, setting a solid foundation for India's innings.
The 37-year-old reflected on his somewhat unnatural aggressive style of play, stating that the solid depth in their batting lineup affords him the freedom to play confidently.
“It feels wonderful. We have played some remarkable cricket throughout the tournament. Achieving this outcome is incredibly satisfying. (The aggressive style) isn’t instinctive for me, but it’s something I aspired to do. When attempting something different, team and management support is crucial. I discussed it with Rahul bhai earlier and now with Gauti bhai too. This shift in my approach has been rewarding,” he commented.
“We need to understand the conditions of the pitch, and I was clear about my strategy for the first five to six overs. I’ve faced dismissals in the past, but execution is key. The batting depth provides me with confidence, especially with Jadeja coming in at number eight, allowing me to play aggressively from the start. As long as I have clarity in my mind, it’s fantastic,” Rohit expressed during the post-match presentation.
This marks India's fourth appearance in an ICC final within two years under Rohit's leadership, securing their second title after the 2024 T20 World Cup. It's also India's third Champions Trophy victory, having previously won in 2002 (shared with Sri Lanka) and 2013.
“I thank everyone who came out to support us. The crowd has been incredible. Even though it wasn’t our home ground, they turned it into our home. It’s a fulfilling win. Our spinners performed excellently despite high expectations, and we capitalized on that. Consistency in our bowling was key,” he added.
