Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 11 (NationPress) - The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs, has successfully repatriated the notorious fugitive Sahil Chauhan from Thailand, as confirmed by officials on Saturday.
Chauhan, who is being pursued by Haryana Police for multiple serious offenses, including murder, attempted murder, dacoity, and illegal firearm charges, is recognized as a significant member of the Bhuppi Rana Gang, which operates in Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh.
His return to India took place on Friday, according to official statements.
The CBI indicated that Chauhan was implicated in a 2017 shooting incident linked to gang conflicts.
On January 4, 2017, he allegedly fired at Monu Rana within the Jagadhari Court Complex in Haryana's Yamunanagar during a court appearance.
A chargesheet was subsequently filed against him, leading to a 10-year prison sentence. However, after being granted bail, he fled the country, evading law enforcement for years.
Acting on a request from Haryana Police, the National Central Bureau in New Delhi issued a Red Notice against Chauhan through INTERPOL.
Following extensive coordination efforts, Chauhan was located in Bangkok and was deported back to India. He arrived at Delhi's international airport on April 10, where he was immediately apprehended by a team from Haryana Police.
Officials emphasized that the CBI, as India’s National Central Bureau for INTERPOL, collaborates closely with domestic law enforcement agencies via the BHARATPOL platform to enhance international cooperation.
"As India's National Central Bureau for INTERPOL, the CBI coordinates with all Law Enforcement Agencies in India through BHARATPOL for assistance via INTERPOL channels. Over 150 fugitives have been repatriated in recent years thanks to this collaboration," they stated.
