Kollam, March 21 (NationPress) In a decisive ruling that concludes one of the most harrowing cases in Kerala's history, the Kollam Additional Sessions Court has handed down a life sentence to Sandeep, the individual charged with the heinous murder of the young physician Dr. Vandana Das.

The prosecution had sought the death penalty, emphasizing the severity of the crime, while the defense argued for maximum leniency during the proceedings.

Following the verdict, Dr. Vandana's mother expressed disappointment, indicating their hopes were pinned on a death sentence.

In response, the prosecution has announced plans to appeal to the Kerala High Court, aiming to secure a harsher punishment.

This tragic event unfolded in the early morning hours of May 10, 2023, at the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital.

Sandeep, a resident of Kudavattur, had been transported to the hospital by Pooyappally police after incurring a leg injury during a conflict.

What transpired within the hospital shocked the community and raised urgent questions regarding the safety of medical personnel.

As per the prosecution's account, an enraged Sandeep seized a pair of surgical scissors from the examination area and launched a brutal assault.

He first attacked the police officers present, then targeted Dr. Vandana Das, who was on duty.

With little opportunity to defend herself, the young doctor was tragically fatally wounded.

The disturbing footage of the assault later emerged, triggering widespread public outrage.

During the trial, the defense claimed that the accused was afflicted with mental health issues.

However, the prosecution refuted this assertion with testimonies from witnesses and medical documentation, maintaining that while Sandeep may have been on medication, he did not suffer from a severe mental disorder that would absolve him of culpability.

The case underwent a thorough judicial process, with over 70 witnesses interrogated alongside 22 pieces of evidence and 207 documents presented to the court.

Significantly, the prosecution pointed out that Sandeep, a schoolteacher by trade, was expected to exemplify positive societal values, which made his actions even more reprehensible.

Ultimately, the court's decision for life imprisonment reflects the severity of the crime, although it refrained from imposing the death penalty.
