Supreme Court to Address Controversial Judiciary Mentions in NCERT Textbook Today
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 26 (NationPress) The Supreme Court is set to review a suo motu case today regarding what it has labeled "objectionable" mentions of the judiciary in a Class 8 social science textbook released by NCERT.
A panel including Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi will consider the case titled ‘In Re: Social Science Textbook For Grade-8 (part-2) Published by NCERT and Ancillary Issues’.
This matter takes on added importance as the Chief Justice expressed significant concern over a chapter addressing judicial corruption in the NCERT Class 8 syllabus. The CJI noted that no entity would be allowed to tarnish the reputation of the judiciary or undermine its integrity.
In response to the court's critical remarks, NCERT has removed the Class 8 textbook from its official site. Reports suggest that the government was dissatisfied with the inclusion of this contentious subject matter.
The apex court has also acknowledged the issue after senior attorney Kapil Sibal, along with Abhishek Singhvi, brought it to the panel's attention, seeking prompt review.
The Class 8 social science textbook, produced by the National Council of Educational Research and Training, addresses several issues confronting the judicial system, such as corruption, a significant backlog of cases, and a shortage of judges.
A portion of the revised textbook titled “corruption in the judiciary” asserts that judges must adhere to a code of conduct that governs their behavior both in and out of the courtroom.
The Supreme Court will now scrutinize the concerns raised regarding the textbook's content and its broader implications.
