New Delhi, Feb 25 (NationPress) The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has temporarily suspended the distribution of its newly published Social Science textbook for Class 8 due to the emergence of inappropriate textual content and a judgment error identified in Chapter 4, titled "The Role of Judiciary in our Society" (pages 125–142).

The textbook, named Exploring Society: India and Beyond, Volume II, was officially launched on February 24, 2026, adhering to the established approval processes for academic publications prepared by NCERT.

However, shortly after the copies were made available and distributed, concerns were raised regarding specific segments within the chapter discussing the judiciary's role and functionality in India.

The Department of School Education and Literacy under the Union Ministry of Education has taken notice of this issue and instructed that the distribution of the textbook be put on strict hold until further review and necessary corrective measures are taken.

NCERT has affirmed its complete adherence to the directive from the Ministry and has immediately ceased further distribution of the textbook pending a revision of the relevant content.

In an official press release, NCERT expressed profound regret over the unintentional inclusion of the inappropriate material and acknowledged the editorial oversight.

The Council reiterated its high regard for the judiciary, recognizing it as a crucial pillar of India’s democratic framework, responsible for upholding the Constitution and safeguarding Fundamental Rights.

NCERT clarified that the inclusion of the inappropriate content was entirely unintentional and that there was no intention to question, undermine, or diminish the authority, dignity, or constitutional role of the judiciary or any other constitutional entity.

Furthermore, the Council asserted that the primary goal behind introducing the new textbooks is to enhance constitutional literacy among students, foster civic awareness, and cultivate respect for democratic institutions and governance frameworks.

NCERT also emphasized its openness to constructive feedback from educators, subject matter experts, and stakeholders during its ongoing academic review and quality assurance processes.

To comprehensively address the matter, the concerned chapter will undergo a careful review and revision in consultation with relevant academic authorities, subject experts, and institutional stakeholders to ensure accuracy, clarity, and alignment with constitutional principles.

The revised version of the textbook will be made available to Class 8 students prior to the commencement of the academic session 2026–27.

NCERT once again expressed regret over the oversight and apologized for the unintentional error, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining academic integrity, institutional respect, and the highest standards in developing educational content.

This development occurs amidst ongoing initiatives to ensure that educational materials accurately convey constitutional values, democratic principles, and uphold the dignity of key institutions.

The incident has also sparked discussions regarding quality control and editorial review processes in textbook preparation, with NCERT assuring stakeholders that additional safeguards and rigorous review protocols will be put in place to minimize the likelihood of such oversights in the future.

The distribution of the textbook will remain suspended until the revision process is concluded and the corrected version is formally approved for circulation.
