Veteran actress Meenakshi Seshadri has revisited one of Bollywood's most technically ambitious sequences — the song 'Jaane Do Mujhe Jaana Hai' from the 1988 blockbuster Shahenshah — describing it as what she believes was India's first hot air balloon song shoot, filmed alongside megastar Amitabh Bachchan. The actress shared the memory during an appearance on the dance reality show India's Best Dancer Season 5.

The Balloon Sequence That Made History

Seshadri recalled that picturising a song aboard a hot air balloon was an extraordinary challenge, made more daunting by the fact that only she and Bachchan were on board during the shoot. 'I think that film marked the very first time a hot air gas balloon was used for a shoot in India,' she said. 'Picturizing a song up in a balloon was a huge feat in itself, and on top of that, it was just Amit ji and me up there.'

The sequence from Shahenshah — directed and produced during the peak of Bachchan's commercial dominance — remains a talking point among film historians as a rare instance of aerial choreography in Indian cinema of that era.

What Seshadri Learned From Bachchan

The actress, best known for her roles in Damini and Hero, noted that Shahenshah was her first collaboration with Amitabh Bachchan. She spoke warmly of his commitment to rehearsals and retakes, a discipline she said set him apart. 'He rehearses more and more, getting better with every single rehearsal and retake,' she said. 'On the other hand, with every rehearsal and retake, I would actually get worse! So I finally had to request him to just go with the first take.'

Seshadri added that she was fortunate to have worked with 'such a legendary artist so early' in her career, describing the experience as formative. She also indicated that Jaya Bachchan could vouch for Amitabh's well-known rehearsal discipline.

The reminiscence came as contestant Dipali and choreographer Tushar delivered a performance on 'Jaane Do Mujhe Jaana Hai' on the show's stage, which Seshadri applauded for its creative interpretation of the original. Legendary actress Jaya Prada also appeared alongside Seshadri in the upcoming episode.

The performance prompted Seshadri to recount the behind-the-scenes challenges of the original shoot — a rare on-screen account of a production milestone that has received little mainstream documentation.
