New Delhi, June 2 (NationPress) Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers lauded the captain of Punjab Kings, Shreyas Iyer, for his spectacular innings against Mumbai Indians, propelling his team to their second IPL final. Iyer's explosive innings of 87 not out off 41 balls was highlighted by eight sixes and five fours in a challenging chase of 204 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday.
With this victory, Punjab Kings are set to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final on June 3, marking the tournament's first new champion since 2022, when the debuting Gujarat Titans, led by Hardik Pandya, claimed the title.
Iyer's performance showcased his composure and maturity, forming a pivotal 84-run partnership with Nehal Wadhera, maintaining the team's momentum despite the loss of Josh Inglis and Wadhera during the chase.
“I’m a massive admirer. What transpired in the match was extraordinary, and Shreyas deserves all the credit. He performed under immense pressure when it truly counted,” said De Villiers on JioStar.
“That boundary off Bumrah past the slip cordon was the shot of the night for me. His sixes were pure, without mishits. He remains composed, avoiding arrogance or excessive emotion — just incredibly level-headed. There are countless more runs left in him,” he added.
Former Indian head coach Sanjay Bangar also commended Iyer's match-winning performance, calling it a remarkable display from the right-handed batsman.
“There’s so much to admire about Shreyas Iyer’s overall strategy. His ability to let the batter at the other end play their natural game is crucial — and that knack for building partnerships made a significant impact. The shots he executed, particularly against quality yorkers — guiding them past short third and point and threading one through fine third man — were exceptional, especially with the game on the line. It was a fantastic effort from Shreyas.
“His experience and temperament were key in countering a potent Mumbai Indians attack, which he dismantled by choosing his moments wisely and targeting the right bowlers,” Bangar stated.
