Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 4 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma remarked on Wednesday that the theatrical heritage of Sivasagar represents a significant chapter in the cultural narrative of Assam, emphasizing that the area has historically been a hub of artistic and intellectual endeavors.
While inaugurating the refurbished Sivasagar Natya Mandir, a heritage site established 125 years ago, Sarma outlined the journey of Assamese theatre from the reign of the Ahom Swargadeos to contemporary times.
He highlighted that Sivasagar, especially the historic Rangpur, has been instrumental in the evolution of theatrical traditions, such as Bhaona and modern drama.
Sarma pointed out that following the migration of the Ahom capital from Gargaon to Rangpur, there was a renewed patronage for theatre and Bhaona.
During the rule of Swargadeo Rudra Singha, Sattriya music thrived, and under Swargadeo Rajeshwar Singha, the performance of 'Ravana Badh' Bhaona, featuring almost 700 artists, marked a landmark moment in Assam's theatrical history.
He mentioned that modern theatre began to flourish in the late 19th century, highlighted by the performances of 'Julius Caesar' in 1883 and 'Bhramaranga' in 1890, both of which took place in Sivasagar. In the 20th century, productions like 'Sonit Kuwori' and 'Chakradhwaj Singha' significantly contributed to a strong sense of cultural and national identity within theatre.
Sarma emphasized Sivasagar’s pioneering role in technical advancements, referencing the introduction of a revolving stage in 1957 as an extraordinary milestone.
He also acknowledged the efforts of numerous theatre personalities, playwrights, and institutions that have preserved the theatrical legacy through the years.
According to the Chief Minister, theatre transcends mere entertainment; it serves to enlighten society, foster innovative ideas, and guide individuals toward intellectual advancement.
He expressed optimism that the reopening of the Sivasagar Natya Mandir would herald a new chapter for theatre in Assam, ensuring that the cultural legacy of Rangpur continues to motivate future generations.
