Did Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Just Launch a Strong Attack on Congress?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Jan 12 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken a vigorous stance against the Congress, denouncing what he described as an “insulting and provocative” comment made by a party leader concerning Sivasagar.
In response to the assertion that Sivasagar would be transformed into “Dhubri,” Sarma questioned the motivations and authority behind such statements, arguing they displayed arrogance and a conscious effort to belittle the historical and cultural importance of the former Ahom capital.
“The question is, who is Congress leader Rezual Karim to suggest turning Sivasagar into Dhubri while advocating for a so-called greater Assam?” the Chief Minister stated during a press briefing.
He claimed that a Congress leader, whose ancestors had migrated from Bangladesh, lacked the moral authority to express such opinions and accused the party of irresponsible rhetoric that could offend public sentiments.
Sarma emphasized that Sivasagar does not belong to any Congress leader, cautioning against intertwining the town with divisive political agendas.
He pointed out that Sivasagar holds a special place in Assam's history and heritage and should not be utilized for political provocation or favoritism.
The Chief Minister also criticized senior Congress figures Gaurav Gogoi and Debabrata Saikia, questioning their persistence in appeasement politics, which he labeled as perplexing and deeply troubling.
He alleged that such political behavior has consistently harmed Assam's social cohesion and unity.
Firmly denouncing any efforts to create discord between regions, Sarma remarked that equating Sivasagar with Dhubri is unacceptable and represents an overt provocation.
“Such remarks are not just reckless but also perilous, as they aim to instigate regional and communal rifts for selfish political advantages,” he stated.
Reaffirming his government's stance, the Chief Minister declared that the BJP-led administration will not tolerate any attempts to compromise Assam's cultural identity or disrupt peace within the state.
He asserted that the people of Assam are adept at recognizing divisive politics and will respond judiciously.
Sarma confirmed that his government remains dedicated to preserving Sivasagar's historical legacy while fostering inclusive development across all parts of Assam, devoid of discrimination or favoritism.
