Did Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Challenge Gaurav Gogoi's Claims?
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 8 (NationPress) Following remarks by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on social media after his press briefing, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a robust counterattack on Sunday. He reiterated his inquiries about Gogoi's international travels and demanded explanations concerning what he termed as serious national security issues.
Gogoi took to X to respond to the Chief Minister’s press conference, labeling it the “most flop press conference of the century” and likening it to “C-grade cinema”.
The Congress MP accused the Chief Minister of presenting “mindless and bogus points” and asserted that the Congress’ #XomoyParivartanYatra had revealed alleged encroachment of nearly 12,000 bighas of land by the CM and his family members.
In rebuttal, CM Sarma dismissed Gogoi’s assertions as politically motivated, shifting the focus back onto the Congress leader. “I have documents. How can he deny that he spent 10 days in Pakistan? What about the changes made to his visa conditions? These are not casual allegations,” CM Sarma stated to reporters.
The Chief Minister emphasized his readiness to publish documentary evidence, insisting that the people of Assam deserve clarity.
“This is not merely political banter. It concerns transparency and accountability. He should explain to the people of Assam the circumstances surrounding his visit to Pakistan and the conditions of his travel,” CM Sarma remarked.
He further rejected Gogoi’s claims regarding land encroachment, stating that all properties held by him and his family are legitimately acquired and disclosed.
“Baseless accusations cannot substitute for facts. Every inch of land owned by my family is properly documented,” he added.
The Chief Minister raised serious allegations that Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, during his visit to Pakistan, went silent on digital platforms for at least 10 days, coinciding with changes in his visa permissions by the interior ministry of Pakistan.
Speaking to reporters, CM Sarma noted, “When Gaurav Gogoi visited Pakistan in 2013, his permission to travel to specific cities was altered by Pakistan’s interior ministry, and he became completely silent on social media, raising numerous questions about his activities during that time.”
According to the Chief Minister, Gogoi may have undergone some “training” sessions while in Islamabad. “After those 10 days of silence, he changed significantly. He became a Lok Sabha MP in 2014 and began asking sensitive questions related to national security, reinforcing my suspicion that he was influenced by Pakistan intelligence during his visit,” the CM concluded.
