Bulawayo, Jan 18 (NationPress) India's U-19 captain Ayush Mhatre lauded his team's standout player Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for showcasing remarkable professionalism, especially under pressure. The 14-year-old made a significant impact by scoring 72 runs off 67 balls, leading India to victory over Bangladesh at the ICC Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup on Saturday.
This victory allowed India to maintain their unbeaten status in the tournament, reinforcing their strength in Group B. At just 14, Sooryavanshi has already achieved notable milestones in his early career, excelling with the bat lately.
“Sooryavanshi exhibited the maturity he possesses and batted exceptionally well. He was patient when the team needed him to stay at the crease. Initially, the conditions were challenging due to some moisture in the pitch, making the ball come onto the bat slower. However, the partnership between Abhigyan Kundu and Sooryavanshi, along with Kanishk Chouhan's innings, was commendable,” Mhatre stated in an interview with ICC.
India managed to score 238 runs while batting first, facilitated by three key contributions. Although rain disrupted Bangladesh's chase, leading to the DLS method and a revised target of 165 runs from 29 overs, India clinched an 18-run win. Bangladesh was bowled out for 146 runs in 28.3 overs.
Kundu played a crucial role in India's innings with a solid 80 runs from 112 balls, complementing Sooryavanshi's aggressive approach. The duo formed a crucial 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket, setting a firm foundation, while Chouhan's brisk 28 runs off 26 balls contributed to their success.
“Kundu is in excellent form during this tournament, which is a great asset for us. His ability to score runs has been fantastic. This victory is significant for our team, and we are focused on our game without overthinking the future,” Mhatre added.
Previously, on the tournament's opening day, India had triumphed over the USA by six wickets (via DLS method), starting their campaign on a high note. Following this 18-run victory against Bangladesh, the Men in Blue will enjoy a week-long break before facing New Zealand in their final group stage match on Friday, January 24, ahead of the super six stage.
