Balurghat, Feb 16 (NationPress) Following the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) choice to suspend seven Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) involved in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal, Union MoS Sukanta Majumdar stated on Monday that stringent measures would be enacted against officials who exhibit bias.
Addressing reporters, Sukanta Majumdar remarked, “The Election Commission has mandated the suspension of officials across seven blocks, including Ghatal, Shamsherganj and Sutia. These officials attempted to register ineligible voters in the electoral rolls, breaching regulations without any valid justification.”
He noted that modern technology simplifies the process of record verification and irregularity detection.
“In this technological era, everything can be scrutinized with AI. Therefore, I have previously emphasized that officials must operate without bias,” he continued.
Issuing a stern warning, Majumdar said, “If you align with Trinamool, the ECI will take action. No one can shield your position. It’s crucial to remain impartial and work transparently to fortify democracy.”
He further urged officials to uphold democratic values and ensure fairness in their responsibilities.
Earlier that day, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the state Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, expressed his approval of the ECI’s suspension of the seven AEROs involved in the ongoing SIR in West Bengal.
Speaking to the press outside Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport before heading to Delhi, he stated, “Despite the provisions of the election constitution, the Election Commission had been advising the Chief Secretary until now... but this is the first occasion the Election Commission has exercised its authority in the SIR process. After this, the Election Commission may also file an FIR if necessary,” said LoP Adhikari.
The BJP leader elaborated, “These seven individuals have been suspended for legitimate reasons. They accepted fake school certificates and PAN cards during the SIR hearings. They have utterly disregarded the 13 guidelines set by the Election Commission.”
Adhikari accused the Mamata Banerjee government of orchestrating such malpractices.
“This has been orchestrated under the direction of state secretary Nandini Chakraborty. District Magistrates (DMs) and District Electoral Officers (DEOs) acted on this, and Mamata Banerjee is at the helm of this entire operation through Nandini Chakraborty,” Adhikari asserted.
