Surat, Aug 5 (NationPress) The Surat Police have expanded their drone fleet by acquiring eight cutting-edge drones in preparation for the upcoming festive season. This brings the total number of drones operated by the city's police force to 20, significantly bolstering their ability to oversee large crowds and sensitive areas in real time.
Having previously operated 12 drones, the Surat Police anticipates gains in situational awareness and faster response times, particularly in congested and high-risk environments.
This initiative is part of the department's comprehensive strategy to incorporate modern technology into law enforcement and public safety efforts.
Commissioner Anupamsinh Gehlot remarked that these drones will be pivotal in maintaining law and order during festivals, which typically draw large crowds to public spaces.
"These drones are incredibly beneficial for monitoring suspicious activities in densely populated areas. Their use will enhance our existing safety protocols," he explained.
The drones, sourced through the office of the Director General of Police (DGP), will also assist in law enforcement beyond managing crowds, particularly in criminal investigations. The aerial footage they capture can serve as admissible evidence in court, thereby potentially elevating the quality of criminal proceedings and increasing conviction rates, Gehlot noted.
Currently, the Surat Police operate with a sanctioned strength of approximately 7,000 personnel, with around 4,700 officers and constables actively serving, including both armed and unarmed staff.
The city aims to grow its police force to 10,000 officers in the coming years to better align with its increasing population, currently estimated at 64 lakh, which is nearing the size of Ahmedabad. Historically, Surat has maintained about 60 police officers per 100,000 residents, compared to Ahmedabad's 176 per 100,000.
Surat also features a Special Action Force (SAF) unit - Group‑11 Surat - established in 2024 and trained for riot control and rapid response to civil unrest.
SAF personnel undergo advanced training based on the national Rapid Action Force model.
