Bhubaneswar, May 12 (NationPress) In preparation for the forthcoming Rath Yatra, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha, Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, conducted a comprehensive review meeting on Monday in the coastal city of Puri. The focus was on security, crowd management, and traffic control.
During this meeting, Khurania allocated specific responsibilities and provided guidance to senior police officials to ensure smooth coordination throughout the grand festival, which is set to begin on June 27 this year.
In a statement to the press in Puri, DGP Khurania announced that, for the first time, drones from the Odisha Police's Coastal Wing will be utilized for aerial surveillance during the festivities.
Additionally, Marine Police and Coast Guard vessels will patrol the sea to bolster coastal security. The entirety of the coastal town will be under CCTV surveillance, with drones equipped with Artificial Intelligence to aid in monitoring crowd movement and managing traffic.
The Odisha Police will implement AI-based systems to boost situational awareness and control crowds during the grand Rath Yatra. DGP Khurania mentioned that central agencies, including the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Coast Guard, and the Indian Navy, will collaborate with Odisha Police to ensure a multi-agency synergy.
He highlighted the importance of close cooperation among all agencies involved. CCTV cameras will be set up at various railway stations and rest areas for devotees, while police will extend camera coverage in areas with high crowd density. The DGP also assessed station-level management plans and discussed potential enhancements in other vital areas.
DGP Khurania assured that the police are well-prepared to tackle any challenges that arise during this significant religious event. He guaranteed that Odisha Police will establish extensive and stringent security measures in Puri throughout the festival.
The DGP also informed the media that considering the sensitivities surrounding the 12th century Jagannath Temple, an armored vehicle named ‘Rakshak’, along with a team from the Special Tactical Unit (STU), has been deployed to Puri.
The STU team is a specialized urban warfare counter-terrorism force, comprising personnel from the Special Operations Group (SOG) who have received training alongside the National Security Guard (NSG).
