Surat, Aug 3 (NationPress) The Surat Municipal Corporation has set a precedent as the first municipal authority in India to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, Drone Technology, 3D Printing, and AR/VR into classrooms for grades 9 through 12.
This innovative educational framework is being rolled out as a pilot program across 18 Suman schools, featuring 12 advanced AI labs that are already operational, providing over 11,000 students with complimentary technical education.
The initiative echoes India’s New Education Policy and aligns with the Gujarat Government’s vision to fuse innovation with smart learning.
Within this framework, students in municipal schools are now actively interacting with cutting-edge technologies that are transforming industries such as defense, agriculture, healthcare, and manufacturing.
From creating robots to piloting drones and crafting in 3D settings, these students—many of whom come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds—are gaining practical, project-based experience that extends beyond traditional textbooks.
Weekly sessions on AI, design thinking, and STEM-focused curricula equip these students with essential real-world problem-solving abilities. “Smart education is more than a trend—it’s a necessity,” remarked Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal, pivotal in initiating this transformation.
“Our goal is not merely to produce job seekers but to empower a new generation of job creators—technologically adept entrepreneurs and innovators.”
In 2023, under the Mission Schools of Excellence initiative introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gujarat launched over 50,000 smart classrooms and 19,600 modern computer labs, marking a significant statewide shift towards technology-integrated education.
Surat has now advanced this initiative—students are receiving training in front-end development, drone aviation, robotics programming, and AI application development.
The AI labs were inaugurated by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who referred to the initiative as a “gateway to new possibilities.”
Principal Mahendrakumar of Suman High School No. 6 characterized the program as a “turning point” for students from lower and middle-income families.
“Our students are not just learning technology—they're living it. They're building robots, exploring virtual realms, and designing innovations that could define the future,” he stated.
The visible impact is already notable—34 students from Suman schools have been selected for national competitions, showcasing their projects in AI, robotics, and 3D printing during the Chief Minister’s recent visit to Sanjivkumar Auditorium, Adajan. Last month, Delhi’s Education Minister Ashish Sood also praised Surat’s tech-driven educational model.
