New Delhi, May 20 (NationPress) The head of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Tapan Deka, has received an extension of one year, valid until June 2026, as confirmed by an official announcement on Tuesday.
Known as a ‘Superspy’, Deka possesses significant expertise in addressing Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and tackling radicalization-related cases. His track record includes effective management of issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir and operations in the Northeast region.
Deka also has extensive experience in leading initiatives against the Indian Mujahideen, a group responsible for various subversive actions throughout India during the 2000s.
The government order stated, "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has sanctioned the extension of Shri Tapan Kumar Deka, IPS (HP:88) as Director of the Intelligence Bureau for a duration of one year beyond 30.06.2025 or until further orders, whichever comes first, in relaxation of the provisions of FR 56 (d) and Rule 16 (1A) of the All India Services (Death cum Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958."
This marks the second consecutive one-year extension for the 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre.
The extension is granted under regulations that allow the central government to prolong the service of key officials such as the chiefs of IB and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), Cabinet Secretary, Home Secretary, and others beyond the typical retirement age of 60.
Prior to his current role, Deka spent over two decades leading the operations wing of the IB, ultimately taking charge of the agency in 2022. He was also responsible for coordinating counter-assault operations during the 26/11 Mumbai attack in 2008.
The IB chief received accolades for his management during his tenure in Assam, notably amid the unrest following the Citizenship Amendment Act's implementation in 2019.
