Hyderabad, Jan 25 (NationPress) The health status of Gajula Soumya, a constable with the excise department, remains critical following an incident in which she was struck by a car linked to a ganja smuggling operation in Telangana's Nizamabad district.
Officials reported that the 23-year-old was transferred to Hyderabad for advanced medical care, where she is currently hospitalized.
Soumya sustained severe injuries while performing her duties, as she was hit by a vehicle during a routine check near Madhavnagar village late Friday night (January 23).
The situation unfolded when a special excise team intercepted a Swift car based on a tip-off. Two of the four individuals in the vehicle exited and fled the scene. Unfortunately, Soumya was standing in front of the car when the driver abruptly accelerated, knocking her down. As she lay on the ground, the driver attempted to reverse the vehicle to evade capture, ultimately colliding with an electric pole while attempting to turn left.
Law enforcement officials apprehended the driver and one other suspect, initiating a search for the remaining two individuals. The excise team successfully confiscated 2.5 kg of ganja from the vehicle, which was being transported from Nirmal district to Nizamabad.
Due to severe internal injuries, doctors had to remove one of Soumya's kidneys during her hospital treatment. As her condition worsened, she was moved to Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad.
The Department of Prohibition and Excise has taken this incident seriously and established a team to conduct a thorough investigation.
Upon receiving a complaint from the department, the police filed an attempted murder charge against the suspects, with both apprehended individuals brought before a court. The driver, Saifuddin, and another suspect, Syed Sohail, are currently in judicial custody.
Authorities are actively searching for the other two suspects, identified as Raheel and Mateen.
Senior officials from the excise department visited Soumya's family to offer support and assurance of assistance.
