Hyderabad, Feb 1 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Telangana, A. Revanth Reddy, has instructed law enforcement to implement stringent measures against those accountable for the tragic demise of excise constable Gajula Soumya.
The 25-year-old lost her life on Saturday night after succumbing to injuries inflicted during a purported attack by 'Ganja' smugglers a week earlier in Nizamabad district.
The Chief Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences regarding Soumya's death, which occurred at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad.
He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Soumya while performing her duties and mandated police officials to take decisive action against those who caused her death.
The Chief Minister also promised that the government would provide all necessary support to Soumya's family during this difficult time.
A statement released by NIMS late Saturday revealed, "All essential medical interventions and advanced life-support measures were administered by a multidisciplinary team of specialists. Despite extensive efforts, the patient could not be revived and was declared deceased on January 31 at 9:41 p.m. NIMS extends its condolences to the grieving family and offers sincere sympathies during this time of immense sorrow."
Soumya was brought to NIMS in the early hours of January 25, initially admitted to the Emergency Department and later transferred to the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit. She remained in critical condition, unconscious and reliant on life support, with multiple organ systems severely impacted.
She suffered serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle belonging to a 'Ganja' smuggling gang in Nizamabad district.
The incident occurred during a vehicle inspection near Madhavnagar village in Nizamabad on January 23.
A specialized excise team, acting on a tip-off, had stopped a car. Two of the four suspects inside the vehicle fled on foot. Soumya, positioned in front of the car, was hit when the driver abruptly accelerated. After she fell beneath the vehicle, the driver attempted to reverse it to escape, ultimately crashing into an electric pole while turning left.
Law enforcement apprehended the driver and one other suspect while searching for the remaining two. The excise team seized 2.5 kg of ganja from the vehicle, which was transporting the contraband from Nirmal district to Nizamabad.
Severely injured, Soumya was rushed to a hospital where doctors had to remove one of her kidneys due to internal injuries.
As her condition deteriorated, she was transferred to Hyderabad and admitted to NIMS.
