Beijing, Sep 30 (NationPress) - As China intensifies its claims over resources in Tibet, environmental activists in the area are reportedly facing ongoing threats from Chinese authorities, according to a recent report.

The report indicates that between 2010 and 2019, numerous activists were detained and handed lengthy prison sentences for peacefully protesting against illegal mining operations, the hunting of endangered species, and environmental degradation throughout Tibet.

According to the 'Greek City Times', among those imprisoned are environmental human rights defenders such as Anya Sengdra, Dorjee Daktal, Kelsang Choklang, Dhongye, Rinchen Namdol, Tsultrim Gonpo, Jangchup Ngodup, Sogru Abhu, and Namesy.

These environmentalists, dedicated to safeguarding the ecosystem and tackling ecological challenges, continue to endure harassment, humiliation, and threats to their lives from Chinese authorities.

For instance, Tibetan environmentalist A-Nya Sengdra, who has already spent seven years behind bars, was recently denied release, extending his imprisonment until February 2026. No justification was provided for this extension, echoing China's tendency to operate without transparency.

This situation is not an isolated case; it reflects a broader pattern of harassment, torture, and imprisonment of Tibetan activists who dare to voice their concerns over environmental exploitation in the region.

Another activist, Tsongon Tsering, was arrested in October 2024 after he exposed illegal sand mining in Ngawa Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southwestern China's Sichuan Province through a video. He accused Anhui Xianhe Construction Engineering Company of unauthorized mining under the pretext of road construction, which resulted in significant environmental damage. Rather than addressing the company’s actions, authorities arrested Tsering and several family members.

The report underscores the grave risks Tibetan environmental defenders face due to the oppressive actions of the Chinese government, which seeks to stifle dissent against harmful practices by state and corporate entities.

The Dalai Lama has voiced concerns about Tibet’s environmental challenges as a global issue, emphasizing the impact of climate change and ecological degradation driven by human activities. Studies reveal that the Tibetan Plateau is warming at a rate three times faster than the global average, leading to glacier retreat. The international community must act swiftly to counter China's policies and protect our climate.
