Kanailal Das, an All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor and one of the most influential political figures in Tamluk Municipality, East Midnapore district, was arrested by police on Tuesday, 23 June on multiple charges linked to alleged corruption and irregular activities. The arrest followed a series of searches at properties reportedly connected to Das, during which investigators recovered large quantities of school uniforms, saris, and tarpaulins.

What the Searches Uncovered

Police conducted searches at a rented house allegedly linked to Das, where officers found a substantial quantity of school students' clothing — including uniforms and saris — scattered across multiple rooms. A separate premises connected to the case yielded a significant number of tarpaulins, according to officials.

The nature and volume of the recovered materials raised suspicions about their source and intended use. Investigators have not yet publicly confirmed the specific scheme or government programme the items may have been diverted from, but the discoveries are being examined as part of the ongoing probe.

Arrest and Interrogation

Following the recoveries, a police team visited Das's residence on Tuesday morning. He was questioned about the presence of the materials found at the rented property. Officials stated that he failed to provide a satisfactory explanation, after which he was detained and subsequently placed under formal arrest.

Notably, Das had also recently faced separate allegations in connection with an assault incident involving a local resident. Police officials have not yet confirmed whether those allegations have been incorporated into the charges registered following his arrest.

Local residents described Das as a commanding presence in Tamluk's social and political landscape. According to locals, he owns several nursing homes in and around the town and had served as president of the local Nursing Home Association. Residents also claimed that key organisational and political decisions of the TMC in the area were frequently taken after consultations with him — underscoring the degree of influence he reportedly wielded beyond his formal role as a municipal councillor.

The arrest comes amid continuing law enforcement action against public representatives across West Bengal facing allegations of corruption, extortion, and other criminal offences.
