The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly convened its first session under the newly formed TVK-led coalition government on Thursday, 18 June, with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar delivering the customary address to the House at Fort St. George in Chennai. Ceremonial Opening at Fort St. George

Governor Arlekar arrived at the Assembly complex at 9.50 am, accorded a ceremonial reception near the second gate of the Secretariat's main building. Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar and Assembly Secretary Srinivasan received the Governor with bouquets before escorting him to the Assembly Hall along a red-carpeted pathway.

The Governor delivered his address in English, after which Speaker Prabhakar read out the Tamil translation. The proceedings were telecast live. It was Speaker Prabhakar who had formally extended the invitation to the Governor to inaugurate the session.

What the Address Is Expected to Cover

The Governor's address is anticipated to lay out the TVK government's major programmes and policy objectives, including key welfare and infrastructure initiatives. The speech is also seen as the administration's first formal signal of its governance priorities following its victory in the Assembly elections.

Notably, Finance Minister Maria Wilson's White Paper is expected to be tabled in the House during the session — a document that will set the economic baseline against which the government's fiscal commitments will be measured.

Business Advisory Committee and Session Schedule

Following the Governor's address, the Business Advisory Committee is expected to convene to finalise the schedule for the remainder of the Assembly session. Political observers are closely watching whether Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will make any significant announcements during the proceedings, particularly on governance, welfare schemes, and economic development.

Opposition Gears Up for Challenges

The principal opposition parties — the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) — are reportedly preparing to raise a range of issues on the floor. These include recent incidents of sexual assault, law and order concerns, power outages across several parts of the state, the government's crop loan waiver programme, and the resignation of MLAs amid ongoing political developments.

With the opposition primed to challenge the ruling alliance on multiple fronts, the opening session is set to deliver the first major parliamentary test for the TVK-led government. How the administration responds to these challenges will offer early clues about its legislative strategy for the term ahead.
