Hyderabad, Jan 1 (NationPress) Celebrations for the New Year took a tragic turn in Hyderabad when one individual lost his life and 15 others fell ill following a late-night gathering.

The unfortunate event transpired in Bhavani Nagar, located under the jurisdiction of the Jagadgirigutta Police Station, in the Medchal Malkajgiri district of Cyberabad.

A group of 17 friends marked the New Year with a party at the Bhavani Nagar Welfare Association, indulging in Biryani and alcohol.

Upon returning home after midnight, they began to feel unwell. Tragically, one of them, identified as Pandu (53), died before reaching the hospital.

The remaining 15 individuals were subsequently admitted to Narayana Malla Reddy Hospital.

Authorities suspect food poisoning may have caused this tragic event. Police have initiated an investigation and registered a case.

Samples of the remaining food and liquor have been collected and sent for laboratory testing.

More information is pending.

In a separate incident in Vanasthalipuram, a man caused a disturbance during a police initiative aimed at curbing drunk driving.

He protested against a breath analyzer test by lying down on the road, claiming that police acted harshly. This protest resulted in a traffic jam in the area, necessitating police intervention to restore order.

A widespread operation against drunk driving was conducted during the night of December 31 and January 1 across the Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda commissionerates. Over 2,000 motorists were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Several other incidents of confrontations between motorists and police during drunk driving checks were reported throughout Greater Hyderabad.

To ensure road safety during New Year celebrations, police enforced traffic restrictions across all three commissionerates and conducted a special operation to monitor adherence to traffic regulations.
