New Delhi, Dec 12 (NationPress) Leaders from various political backgrounds expressed profound sorrow on Friday following the demise of former Union Home Minister and esteemed Congress leader Shivraj Patil. He is fondly remembered as a dignified statesman who dedicated himself to serving the nation with unwavering resolve.
Patil, aged 90, passed away at his residence ‘Devghar’ in Latur, Maharashtra, after facing a brief illness.
NCP (Sharad Pawar) MP Supriya Sule reflected on the long-standing political relationship between her party chief, Sharad Pawar, and Shivraj Patil. In her tribute, she mentioned, “For many years, Sharad Pawar and Shivraj Patil collaborated… He has left behind an impressive legacy… The nation has lost a truly dignified leader. Today, I extend my heartfelt tribute on behalf of my party and family.”
Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat characterized Patil as a disciplined and towering presence in national politics. “He was undeniably a senior and disciplined leader, and we are saddened by his departure. The loss of someone of his caliber, who devoted their life to a noble cause, is felt deeply. Our sincere condolences go to his family,” he stated.
Bhaskar Jadhav, a leader from Shiv Sena (UBT), also shared his grief, emphasizing Patil’s dedication to public service. “Shivraj Patil Chakurkar has passed away today. This news saddens me greatly. He served diligently for many years in Maharashtra and the nation’s Parliament. I have always respected his commitment to his work and principles,” Jadhav remarked.
Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar acknowledged Patil’s significant contributions to both national and state politics. “Shivraj Patil, former Speaker of the Lok Sabha, has departed from us. This is a tragic loss for both the nation and the state. He played a crucial role in elevating Maharashtra’s status during his service. The absence of such a distinguished leader brings immense sorrow to both the nation and the state,” he expressed.
Shivraj Patil was a seasoned parliamentarian who held the position of Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008. Before that, he served as the Lok Sabha Speaker from 1991 to 1996 and later took on the role of Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015.
He is survived by his son Shailesh Patil, daughter-in-law Archana—a BJP leader—and two granddaughters. His passing signifies the end of an extraordinary public life that profoundly influenced national governance and public service.
