Arrest in Attempted Murder Case Involving Trinamool Leader in South Dinajpur
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 29 (NationPress) In a significant development four days post an attempted murder of a Trinamool Congress worker, the Gangarampur Police in South Dinajpur district apprehended the primary suspect, Babu Chowdhury, a notable local leader of the Trinamool Congress, on Sunday. The firearm used in this shooting incident has also been seized. To date, the Gangarampur Police have arrested a total of six individuals in relation to this case. The chief suspect, Babu Chowdhury, has been presented before the Gangarampur Sub-Divisional Court.
The incident unfolded on the evening of March 24, when Babu Chowdhury, who serves as the Town President for the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backward Classes wing of the Trinamool Congress, along with his associates, allegedly shot a fellow party member, Shiva Chowdhury, right outside the Gangarampur Police Station. Although several individuals were detained during the investigation, Babu Chowdhury had evaded capture until now.
Following a tip-off from confidential sources, the Gangarampur Police executed a raid at a relative's house in Malda and successfully arrested the prime suspect. District Superintendent of Police Chinmoy Mittal held a press briefing in Gangarampur to disclose further details of the incident, which has ignited fervent discussions within political circles as elections loom.
The Superintendent of Police reported that Babu Chowdhury, along with two accomplices, was responsible for shooting Shiva Chowdhury in front of the police station days prior. Local residents promptly transported Shiva Chowdhury to the Gangarampur Super Speciality Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention.
During the investigation, the police had previously arrested two individuals, and information from Shiva Chowdhury's brother confirmed Babu Chowdhury's presence at the scene during the attack. They have also secured CCTV footage from the incident location, and the weapon used in the shooting has been retrieved.
As of now, the leadership of the Trinamool Congress has not taken any disciplinary steps against the accused, a delay that has drawn sharp criticism from local BJP candidate, Satyanarayan Roy. He expressed concern, stating, “Despite the severity of the situation, the Trinamool Congress has not even contemplated expelling Babu Chowdhury from the party. Individuals like him, implicated in criminal activities, are considered the Trinamool Congress’s key assets. This explains their reluctance to take action, resulting in a climate of fear throughout Gangarampur.”
On the other hand, Subhash Bhowal, the District President of the South Dinajpur unit of the Trinamool Congress, commented, “There is no tolerance for criminal behavior within our organization. I will gather all relevant information regarding this incident and consult with the party leadership. The law must take its course, and if the allegations are substantiated, appropriate measures will be enforced.”
