Kolkata, March 31 (NationPress) Following the recent demonstrations by a segment of Indians in the UK during West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s address last week at Oxford University’s Kellogg College, a leading youth figure from the Trinamool Congress on Monday condemned the party for its silence regarding the incident.
He expressed disappointment at certain Trinamool Congress leaders and elected officials for their lack of response to the insult directed at the party's supreme leader during her international visit.
“I urge the elected officials and party leaders to voice their concerns regarding the insult to our supreme leader. Remember, your current positions—whether as elected representatives or in significant roles—are due to the support of our supreme leader and her party. You gained recognition among the public or attained election thanks to the acknowledgment provided by our supreme leader,” stated Debangshu Bhattacharya, the youth leader in charge of the party’s Information Technology cell in West Bengal, in a statement released on Monday.
He asserted that staying silent during critical moments equates to betraying the party. He questioned why only a select few within the party consistently speak out on issues and face backlash.
“Only a handful of us will consistently take a stand. Only a few among us will voice their opinions on any matter and subsequently face trolling. We too have families. We could have chosen to remain silent. If we didn’t back down then, why are you resistant now?
“If you preferred silence, why did you contest and get elected as representatives in panchayats, municipalities, Assembly, and Parliamentary constituencies?” Bhattacharya challenged.
He further remarked that he has never displayed an “escapist attitude” in any crisis.
“Whether it was during the unwarranted harassment of our leader Abhishek Banerjee by central agencies or regarding the R.G Kar tragedy, I have not been able to stay silent. Therefore, I cannot remain silent about what transpired at Oxford,” Bhattacharya asserted.
Political analysts believe that Bhattacharya, being a notable representative of the Trinamool Congress faction advocating for “fresh blood” in the party, has likely directed his remarks towards the “old guard” faction amidst ongoing internal discussions about “fresh blood versus old guard” that have emerged over time.
Meanwhile, opposition parties have claimed that this is a typical strategy employed by Trinamool Congress leaders to display their allegiance to the Chief Minister ahead of elections.
