Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shillong, March 12 (NationPress) Gradually, normalcy is being restored in Tura, located in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district, following a two-day period of unrest. On Thursday, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma visited multiple affected regions, instructing officials to swiftly deliver food assistance to residents impacted by the chaos.
During his visit, Sangma engaged with community members and assessed the ground realities in various parts of the town that experienced incidents of vandalism and arson.
He also directed the district administration to guarantee that essential supplies reach those facing shortages as a result of the unrest.
Residents informed the Chief Minister that approximately 17 communities in and around the Araimile area are currently struggling with a lack of rice and other vital goods due to the disruptions caused by the violence.
In response to the situation, Sangma instructed the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills district to collaborate with local development committees and compile a list of affected households for prompt distribution of relief materials.
“The administration must ensure that the affected families receive immediate support and essential supplies,” the Chief Minister emphasized during his visit.
CM Sangma also examined numerous damaged properties and reassured residents that the government would provide necessary assistance to those whose shops, homes, or businesses were affected during the incidents.
Meanwhile, residents from various parts of Tura participated in voluntary clean-up efforts to restore order in the town.
Community members, youth groups, and local organizations were observed clearing debris, shattered materials, and burnt remnants left behind after the disturbances.
The unrest initiated earlier this week during protests against the inclusion of non-tribals in the upcoming elections for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
These protests escalated into violence in certain areas as alleged miscreants engaged in vandalism and arson.
Authorities have since heightened security measures and continue to closely monitor the situation while working in coordination with community leaders to ensure peace and stability in the region.
