Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shillong, March 15 (NationPress) A violent hailstorm, accompanied by fierce winds and heavy rain, wreaked havoc across numerous regions in Meghalaya on Sunday, inflicting damage on homes, vehicles, and crops while disrupting electricity services in various localities, officials reported.
Disaster management authorities stated that all 12 districts of the state were impacted, with the West Garo Hills district suffering the most severe consequences.
The storm hit Tura town and surrounding areas in West Garo Hills on Sunday morning, unleashing hailstones of unusual size, some as large as golf balls.
This intense weather episode lasted for approximately 20 minutes, resulting in significant destruction to tin-roofed structures and numerous vehicles left exposed along roadways.
Officials noted that this storm was the third occurrence of severe weather affecting the region that night.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma convened a review session with senior officials on Sunday to evaluate the damage caused by the hailstorm, which particularly affected Tura, Meghalaya's second major commercial hub after Shillong.
The meeting included Chief Secretary Shakil P. Ahammed, the Commissioner and Secretary of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, along with Deputy Commissioners from the impacted districts.
During the session, the Chief Minister instructed officials to closely monitor the situation and ensure prompt relief and support for affected families.
He also urged district administrations to prioritize the restoration of essential services such as electricity and water supply without delay.
Residents reported that the unusually large hailstones damaged homes and vehicles, puncturing roofing sheets and harming properties across various neighborhoods.
Authorities have been advised to stay alert and coordinate with local administrations to conduct a thorough evaluation of the damage and guarantee timely support for those impacted.
In a post on his official X account, Chief Minister Sangma stated: "Held a review meeting with the Chief Secretary, Commissioner and Secretary (Revenue and Disaster Management), and Deputy Commissioners to assess the damages caused by the recent hailstorm."
"Directions were issued to closely monitor the situation on the ground, ensure immediate relief and assistance to affected households, and restore and maintain essential utilities at the earliest," the Chief Minister added.
