Political Turmoil in Tamil Nadu: TVK Candidate Faces Sexual Harassment Allegations
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 31 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu Police have initiated legal proceedings against a candidate from the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) amidst serious allegations of sexual harassment, igniting a political uproar in the state.
A complaint has been lodged against Prakash, also known as Kutty, the TVK representative for the Poonamallee Assembly constituency. The case is registered under various sections, including Section 6, prompting an investigation in the Tiruvallur district.
Currently, Prakash holds the position of the Tiruvallur South district secretary for the party.
According to police reports, the case arose from a complaint by a female party executive. She accused Prakash of sexually harassing her during a wedding reception in Tiruvallur approximately six months prior. This event was attended by several TVK leaders, including the party’s general secretary, Anand, along with other district officials.
The complainant stated that she had initially brought the matter to the attention of party leadership at the time of the incident. However, despite receiving assurances that action would be taken, no measures were reportedly initiated by the party.
The issue re-emerged on Monday when the complainant, accompanied by her husband, visited the office of the Tiruvallur District Superintendent of Police to formally submit her complaint detailing the alleged harassment.
Following her statement, the local police registered a case and commenced preliminary investigations.
Police officials confirmed that the complainant has been interrogated, and further investigations are currently underway. They indicated that appropriate legal actions will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
In the meantime, the situation has taken a contentious turn as Prakash’s family has denied the allegations. His wife has filed a counter-complaint with district police, asserting that the claims are fabricated and driven by ulterior motives.
She alleges that the complainant invented the charges after being denied a position within the party.
This incident unfolds at a critical moment, shortly after TVK leader Vijay announced the party’s list of candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections, with Prakash named as the nominee from Poonamallee.
As elections draw near, this incident is poised to attract significant political scrutiny as the investigation progresses.
