Will the Congress-led UDF Welcome Anvar, Janu, and VSDP as Associate Members and Finalize Seat Sharing by January?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kochi, Dec 22 (NationPress) Following a remarkable showing in the recent local body elections in Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) convened on Monday to welcome former two-time MLA P.V. Anvar, tribal leader C.K. Janu, and the VSDP of Vishnupuram Chandrasekheran as associate members of the coalition. This move indicates an early strategy to expand its political reach ahead of the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections next year.
Although the VSDP and Janu's party were aligned with the BJP-led NDA, they have distanced themselves from the BJP recently. Anvar, previously an Independent MLA backed by the Left, has also parted ways with the CPI-M.
This resolution was made during a high-level UDF meeting, which underscored the necessity for early election preparation, including fast-tracking discussions on seat-sharing.
UDF leaders communicated that the coalition aims to finalize seat-sharing arrangements by January, a proactive approach compared to previous last-minute negotiations that often led to internal discord.
The meeting emphasized the importance of organizational clarity and political unity as the front gears up to challenge the ruling CPI-M-led Left Democratic Front (LDF).
The UDF also deliberated on its stance regarding Kerala Congress-Mani, the third-largest entity in the ruling LDF. A clear decision was made that while the UDF would not pursue any engagement or discussions with the Mani faction, they would remain receptive if the party sought to realign politically.
"If Kerala Congress-Mani approaches us for talks, discussions can take place. However, no representative from the Congress-led UDF will seek negotiations with them," a source revealed.
Kerala Congress-Mani was part of the UDF before the 2020 local body elections but later switched allegiance to the LDF, a transition that significantly reshaped electoral dynamics in central Kerala.
Since then, the party has established itself as a significant ally of the CPI-M.
The meeting also highlighted the need for Kerala Congress-M to clearly articulate its position amidst ongoing political speculation. UDF leaders stressed that the coalition's strategy would prioritize clarity over ambiguity.
With the inclusion of Anvar, Janu, and Chandrasekheran, alongside a renewed focus on early seat-sharing, the UDF appears eager to present a united front and demonstrate preparedness as it seeks to regain political traction against the ruling Left ahead of the Assembly elections.
