Ahmedabad, June 26 (NationPress) Botad MLA Umesh Makwana has declared his resignation from all roles within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Gujarat, alleging that the party displays discrimination against OBC members. However, he made it clear that he will retain his position as an MLA.
Makwana submitted his resignation from the positions of AAP's Gujarat Assembly Whip and the party’s National Joint Secretary, citing a long-standing internal bias within the party's framework.
“The Aam Aadmi Party, similar to the BJP and Congress, has treated the Backward Classes unfairly,” Makwana stated in his declaration.
“Every political party, without exception, has been unjust to OBC communities,” he added.
As a prominent OBC face within AAP in Gujarat, Makwana asserted that his concerns regarding representation and internal fairness were consistently overlooked.
In response, AAP’s Isudan Gadhvi remarked, “Umesh Makwana is suspended from the party for five years due to anti-party and anti-Gujarat actions.”
Makwana, who holds a B.Ed from Bhavnagar University, is recognized in his community as a social worker and philanthropist, particularly for his efforts in establishing primary and secondary schools.
He gained recognition for distributing over 600,000 food packets during the COVID‑19 lockdown alongside other AAP MLAs under the 'Manavta Seva Rath' initiative.
A member of the Koli community, he operates a construction and general trading enterprise and reported assets of around Rs 85 lakh with liabilities of Rs 28 lakh in his 2022 election affidavit.
Demonstrating high civic engagement, his legislative record reflects nearly 97 percent attendance and 24 Assembly debates, significantly surpassing state averages.
Political analysts believe this resignation could escalate tensions within AAP’s Gujarat faction, which is striving to establish its grassroots presence in the region.
Makwana’s departure from organizational roles is perceived as a setback for the party’s efforts to unite OBC support ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
His ongoing status as a sitting MLA may suggest his plans to either operate as an Independent or team up with another political entity soon.
Meanwhile, AAP recently showcased a strong electoral performance by securing the Visavadar Assembly seat in Gujarat’s bypolls conducted on June 19, where senior leader Gopal Italia defeated BJP’s Kirit Patel by a margin of 17,554 votes (75,942 to 58,388).
