New Delhi, Dec 30 (NationPress) The Indian Army is embracing a dual strategy of tradition and technology as it continues to modernize its operations. This innovative approach will be highlighted at the upcoming Republic Day parade, where for the first time, double-humped Bactrian camels and Zanskari ponies will march along Kartavya Path, symbolizing the army's resilience and adaptability in challenging terrains.

The Remount Veterinary Corps (RVC) contingent is set to be a key highlight of the parade, led by a female officer, marking a significant moment in the evolving leadership of the Indian Army. It is also noteworthy that Bactrian camels will take part in the Republic Day parade for the first time. These camels have been incorporated into the Indian Army for last-mile logistics and patrol duties in eastern *Ladakh's* cold desert region, near the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Over the last two years, Bactrian camels have demonstrated their effectiveness in some of the toughest operational conditions. They can function at altitudes between 15,000 and 18,000 feet, carry loads of 150-200 kilograms, and endure temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius.

In addition to their logistical roles, they are also employed in long-range patrols in areas that are inaccessible to vehicles. Currently, more than a dozen Bactrian camels have been brought into service, and during the parade, two of these camels will make their debut on Kartavya Path, likely the first time they will be showcased in *Delhi*.

Originally from Mongolia and Central Asia, these camels are believed to have arrived in *Ladakh* centuries ago via the historic Silk Route and are now bred in *Hunder village* of the Nubra Valley.

Marching alongside the camels will be four Zanskari ponies. Known for their remarkable endurance, these ponies have been gradually inducted into the army over the past two years. They can carry over 70 kilograms, operate effectively at altitudes reaching 18,000 feet, and withstand temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius.

The ponies play a vital role in sustaining supply lines in remote and rugged regions where mechanized transport is not feasible. Reports indicate that the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)'s Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) in *Leh*, in partnership with the Army's Remount Veterinary Corps, conducted extensive studies on both Bactrian camels and Zanskari ponies prior to their formal induction into military service.

Moreover, the RVC contingent will also showcase a fascinating mix of traditional and modern warfare capabilities. To combat enemy drones, trained eagles are being employed as part of an innovative anti-drone strategy. These birds are adept at reconnaissance and can intercept small drones mid-air. Four trained eagles will be featured during the Republic Day parade.

These eagles were first introduced during the India-US joint military exercise “Yudh Abhyas” in 2022, which took place in *Auli, Uttarakhand*.

The Army Dog Squad will also be present at the parade, featuring around 10 military dogs, including indigenous breeds like Mudhol Hound, Rampur Hound, Chippiparai, Kombai, and Rajapalayam, along with three conventional foreign breeds.

This year’s Republic Day parade will not only highlight military strength but will also emphasize sustainable and innovative methods that aid soldiers in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
