Upcoming Iran-E3 Discussions Set for Mid-January

Tehran, Jan 1 (NationPress) A fresh session of discussions involving Tehran and the E3 nations—France, Britain, and Germany—is scheduled to take place in Geneva, Switzerland, on January 13, according to a report from Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency, citing a high-ranking Iranian official.

The remarks were made by Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, during a press briefing in Tehran on the occasion of the anniversary of the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani by the United States in January 2020, the report indicated.

The upcoming discussions, which are described as “not negotiations,” will aim to clarify various issues of mutual interest and conduct further consultations to determine the approach and framework for any potential negotiations in the future, according to Gharibabadi.

In the last round of discussions, senior diplomats from Iran and the three E3 countries met in Geneva in late November, where they exchanged insights on a variety of topics, including Tehran's nuclear program, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Post-November discussions, Gharibabadi remarked that “candid discussions” had taken place, emphasizing that they reviewed recent bilateral, regional, and international developments, particularly concerning the nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions.

Iran entered into a nuclear agreement with global powers in July 2015, consenting to certain restrictions on its nuclear activities in exchange for the alleviation of sanctions. However, the United States withdrew from this agreement in May 2018 and reinstated sanctions on Iran, which led to Tehran reducing its commitments under the agreement.

Negotiations aimed at reviving the deal commenced in April 2021 in the Austrian capital, Vienna. Despite multiple rounds of discussions, no notable progress has been achieved thus far.
