Bengaluru, Jan 17 (NationPress) The US has inaugurated its consulate in Bengaluru on Friday, representing a vital advancement in fortifying diplomatic relations between India and the United States.
The opening ceremony was graced by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and US Ambassador Eric Garcetti among various other notable figures.
In his address, EAM Jaishankar stated, "The commencement of the US Consulate in Bengaluru is a remarkable milestone, meeting a long-awaited request from the citizens of Bengaluru and Karnataka. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's guidance, the government has been proactive in addressing this necessity. This consulate serves as an outstanding platform for the people of Karnataka to pursue global ambitions. Participating in this occasion has filled me with great joy."
He subsequently shared on X, saying: "Delighted to partake in the opening ceremony of the US Consulate in Bengaluru. Congratulations to @USAmbIndia Eric Garcetti and his team...our partnership is propelled by robust people-to-people connections. This is evident in sectors such as technology, innovation, space, defense, and education. Today's inauguration of the new US Consulate in Bengaluru will significantly bolster these partnerships, encouraging the exchange of ideas and enhancing talent mobility."
Deputy CM Shivakumar conveyed to the media, "I express my gratitude to the American Consulate and EAM S. Jaishankar on this historic occasion. Jaishankar's father chaired Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bengaluru. Our MPs have tirelessly worked towards setting up the US Consulate here. The Minister for IT and BT Industries has also played a crucial role in this endeavor."
"India is represented through Bengaluru. This day holds immense significance for the state. We have long aimed to establish the US Consulate in Bengaluru. The initiative began during the Congress government led by the late S.M. Krishna after organizing the Global Investors’ Meet. Even when Krishna was External Affairs Minister, those efforts persisted. Today is a momentous day for Karnataka, as Bengaluru and Karnataka stand as global symbols of India," Shivakumar stated.
"This is not merely about securing passports or visas. The brightest students from India are making global contributions. Karnataka is a center of knowledge and technology, boasting flourishing IT, BT, and startup ecosystems. Moreover, it is a leading hub for health tourism. Following Maharashtra, Karnataka ranks second in tax revenue and export generation for the nation," he highlighted.
"Bengaluru alone contributes 40 percent of the country's export revenue. In the future, US universities may set up institutions here through collaborations, minimizing the necessity for our children to study abroad. I have prioritized attending this ceremony, representing the government," Shivakumar concluded.
BJP National Yuva Morcha President and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya expressed, "Although Bengaluru is globally recognized for its contributions in research, innovation, and exploration, the absence of a US Consulate here compelled Kannadigas to travel to distant cities like Hyderabad or Chennai."
"The establishment of the US Consulate is not just a matter of convenience but also a step towards positioning Bengaluru as a globally significant city. It will enhance India-US bilateral relations and benefit countless students, professionals, and others. On behalf of all Kannadigas, I extend my heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Dr. S. Jaishankar for addressing this long-standing request," he remarked.
"The opening of the US Consulate in Bengaluru, India's Silicon Valley and a hub of technology and innovation, is regarded as a source of immense pride and joy. It marks a significant advancement in strengthening India-US bilateral relations. Despite Bengaluru being a global leader in research, innovation, software, and biotechnology, residents had to travel to cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, or Mumbai for visa processing. The inauguration of the US Consulate in Bengaluru will substantially benefit millions of professionals and students. This is a proud moment as a long-cherished request of Kannadigas has been fulfilled," Surya concluded.
