Bhopal, May 15 (NationPress) Following the move by BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah on Thursday to challenge a High Court ruling at the Supreme Court, which initiated suo motu proceedings against him for his derogatory remarks regarding Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, Congress Rajya Sabha MP and senior advocate Vivek Tankha raised concerns about whether the BJP's legal team was assisting Shah in this matter.
"Minister Vijay Shah is heading to the Supreme Court this morning. Is the BJP providing legal support to the minister? This would go against the sentiments of the nation and the Indian Army. The BJP's silence on dismissing the minister raises eyebrows. Patriots will certainly oppose this," Tankha shared on his social media account.
In a subsequent post, Tankha revealed, "Breaking News: Should Vijay Shah's appeal be mentioned in the Supreme Court and taken under consideration, Rajya Sabha MPs and senior advocates Vivek Tankha, Kapil Sibal, Indira Jai Singh, and KTS Tulsi will stand in opposition to Vijay Shah in court."
This development comes on the heels of a harsh rebuke from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, labeling Shah's comments as dangerous, scurrilous, and of the language of the gutter. The court directed the police to file an FIR against him for charges related to promoting enmity and hatred.
Responding to the court's orders, the Madhya Pradesh Police registered a case late Wednesday night against Shah for his communal, sexist, and derogatory comments regarding Colonel Qureshi.
The High Court is scheduled to conduct a hearing on this matter, during which it will ask the state police for a status report on the FIR.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi gained attention for conducting regular press briefings alongside Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh during Operation Sindoor – the Indian armed forces mission targeting terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
In a widely circulated video, Shah was heard stating: "They (terrorists) killed our Hindu brothers after stripping them. PM Modi responded by sending their (terrorists') sister in an Army plane to strike them in their homes. They made our sisters widows, so Modi sent their own sister to retaliate against them."
In light of public outcry, Shah later apologized, asserting he respected the armed forces and referred to Colonel Qureshi as a sister, expressing his regret "from the bottom of his heart."
