Indore, May 15 (NationPress) Senior Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh expressed his discontent on Thursday regarding the BJP leadership's inaction concerning Minister Vijay Shah’s purportedly offensive comments about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi.
During a press conference held in Indore, the Rajya Sabha MP urged the top BJP officials to provide a definitive response, asserting that Shah’s remarks have offended the feelings of the country.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president J.P. Nadda must clarify their stance on whether they support Vijay Shah’s statements against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. If they do not, why has he not been dismissed from the cabinet and the party? Who is protecting him?” Singh questioned.
He praised the Madhya Pradesh High Court, especially Justice Atul Sreedharan, for acknowledging the situation and instructing the state Director General of Police (DGP) to file an FIR against Shah.
“What the BJP should have acted upon, the court had to undertake. I am grateful to Justice Sreedharan for mandating an FIR. However, this matter transcends legalities—it’s about political responsibility. Why is the BJP’s upper leadership still mute?” Singh remarked.
Congress general secretary (organization) and MP K.C. Venugopal also criticized the BJP in a social media post late Wednesday, questioning the lack of action against the Minister despite the High Court's involvement.
“From the Madhya Pradesh Minister who has insulted Colonel Sofiya Qureshi to Godse-devotee Pragya Thakur, it’s evident that no matter how toxic or anti-national your statements are, there will be no repercussions in the BJP,” Venugopal posted on X.
He added, “Failing to dismiss Minister Vijay Shah, even after the High Court ordered an FIR, is a tacit endorsement of his remarks. We will persist in demanding his ousting—there is no other option.”
On Wednesday, the Madhya Pradesh High Court instructed the DGP to file an FIR against Shah, which was submitted later that evening under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other relevant provisions.
However, during a hearing on Thursday, Justice Sreedharan expressed his displeasure with the FIR, describing it as inadequately composed.
“There is no specific reference to the alleged actions that fulfill the criteria of the offences. It appears to be merely a formality,” the judge stated.
