Bhopal, May 14 (NationPress) Madhya Pradesh Tribal Affairs Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah, whose controversial comments regarding Colonel Sofiya Qureshi ignited national outrage, was called in by state BJP chief V. D Sharma late on Tuesday evening.
Following a private discussion with Sharma, the minister clarified that his statements were misinterpreted and taken out of context.
He expressed regret, emphasizing that Colonel Sofiya Qureshi has brought pride to the nation and that he holds her in high regard.
“We acknowledge the decisive actions of the Indian forces in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. I won’t comment on those who are distorting my remarks. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi has indeed made the nation proud. We honor both sisters,” he declared post-meeting with V. D Sharma.
While addressing a public function in Mhow (Indore district) on Monday, Shah commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership regarding the April 22 Pahalgam terror incident.
However, his remarks drew significant backlash.
In discussing Operation Sindoor, Shah remarked that PM Modi dispatched a “sister from the same community” as those in Pakistan to retaliate against the April 22 attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam.
He added, “PM Modi is dedicated to the community. Those who caused anguish to our daughters (in Pahalgam), we sent a sister from their own ranks to teach them a lesson.”
It is worth noting that the Indian Army officer had, along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh of the Indian Air Force, provided media briefings during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan.
The Opposition Congress responded vehemently. Sharing a video clip on the social media platform ‘X’, they criticized Shah for implying that Indian Army officers are “sisters of terrorists,” a statement they claim disrespects not only women in uniform but the entire armed forces.
“The valorous daughters of our army are being termed as sisters of terrorists. This outrageous statement has emerged from MP Minister Vijay Shah. It is a disgrace to our formidable army,” Patwari stated at a press conference in Bhopal.
Patwari has also called for Shah’s removal from his ministerial position.
“If the Chief Minister does not dismiss Shah, it will be perceived as the state cabinet endorsing his indecent and communal comments,” Patwari warned.
He also highlighted that this is the same Vijay Shah who was previously removed from the Cabinet for making inappropriate remarks about former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s wife, Sadhna Singh, back in 2013.
