Bhopal, May 15 (NationPress) Madhya Pradesh Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah has publicly apologized for his contentious remarks directed towards Colonel Sofiya Qureshi.
“I, Vijay Shah, feel deeply ashamed and regretful for my recent remarks that have caused distress across various communities. I extend my heartfelt apologies. Our nation’s sister, Sofia Qureshi ji, has risen above societal divides while serving her country,” Shah stated in a video shared on Wednesday via X.
“In response to the Madhya Pradesh High Court's order, the Chief Minister has instructed actions to be taken concerning my statements,” the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) announced on Thursday morning on X.
The Minister further emphasized his respect for the Armed Forces, referring to Colonel Sofiya as his “sister.”
“Though some inappropriate phrases slipped in my statement, my intentions were never misguided. I apologize to everyone, particularly to my sister, Sofiya Qureshi,” he reiterated.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a distinguished officer in the Indian Army, has been actively participating in press briefings alongside Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, providing critical updates on Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
A controversy ensued after Minister Vijay Shah made a problematic comment during a public event in a rural area of Indore district on Monday, without naming Qureshi directly.
“Those who brought sorrow to our daughters, we have sent their own sister to teach them a lesson,” Shah remarked, in what was interpreted as a reference to Colonel Qureshi, igniting public outrage.
This latest apology follows the Madhya Pradesh High Court's serious attention to Shah's remarks against the officer, ordering the Madhya Pradesh Police to file an FIR against him.
Earlier this week, the BJP state organizational secretary Hitanand Sharma admonished Vijay Shah regarding the controversy.
At that time, the Minister expressed: “Coming from a family of martyrs and soldiers, I was emotional due to the Pahalgam incident. I apologize if my words offended anyone or any community. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi is a national pride and she is like my sister.”
