New Delhi, May 14 (NationPress) - Madhya Pradesh BJP Minister Vijay Shah has ignited a political uproar due to his contentious comments allegedly directed at Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. These remarks have drawn severe backlash from various political leaders throughout India.
While addressing a public event in Mhow, Minister Shah referenced 'Operation Sindoor' and suggested that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had dispatched a "sister from the same community" as those in Pakistan to retaliate against the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir. This statement has been widely interpreted as a jab at Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who is part of the Muslim community.
RJD leader Manoj Jha criticized the minister's comments as a disgrace. In an interview with IANS, Jha remarked, "This is inherently shameful. Both our daughters, Sofiya and Vyomika, conducted an impressive press briefing, showcasing our military and our nation. Their briefing sent a powerful message to the world about India's position."
He added, "It is troubling that prominent BJP leaders have chosen to remain silent on these statements. A similar situation arose recently involving Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, and yet the government refrained from addressing it; this is unacceptable."
BJP national spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also denounced the comments.
In an interview with IANS, he stated, "This comment is not only incorrect but also foolish. Qureshi and her entire family are dedicated to the security of our nation and are considered a source of pride. Does he not understand the distinction between terrorism and nationalism? What kind of language is he using? Such statements are inexcusable."
Madhya Pradesh BJP President V.D. Sharma defended the party's leadership, asserting, "The BJP leadership is very responsive. When such incidents arise, we take swift action and engage in necessary discussions. No one has the right to disparage a woman who is a daughter of this nation. The entire country salutes her bravery."
Sharma added, "It is a matter of pride that such acts of courage are emerging under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi."
JD(U) leader K.C. Tyagi also condemned Shah's remarks, stating to IANS, "Vijay Shah's comment is inappropriate and should be condemned. He owes an apology to the nation for disrespecting women's empowerment."
Shadab Shams, President of the Uttarakhand Waqf Board, echoed similar sentiments, claiming, "India's daughter has brought pride to the country and should not be judged by her religion. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi is also a daughter of India. Every son and daughter of this nation is ready to sacrifice when necessary."
He added, "People like Shah warrant pity. I trust the party will hold him accountable according to their standards. We have no words for those with such a mindset," he told IANS.
As outrage surged across social media and political arenas, immediate damage control was initiated. Minister Shah was called for a private meeting with state BJP head V.D. Sharma on Tuesday evening. Following the meeting, he released a statement.
"I have no comments on the interpretations of my remarks. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi has made the nation proud. We respect both sisters. I never intended to offend anyone and sincerely apologize," Shah stated post-meeting.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh from the Indian Air Force, significantly contributed to the media briefing during 'Operation Sindoor' — India's precise military response following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the death of 26 civilians.
Both officers received widespread acclaim for their professionalism and clarity, embodying the determination of the armed forces.
