New Delhi, May 14 (NationPress) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati fiercely criticized Madhya Pradesh BJP Minister Vijay Shah on Wednesday for his controversial comments regarding Indian Army Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, insisting that the BJP and the central government must impose strict penalties on him.
Shah ignited a political uproar during a speech in Mhow when he mentioned 'Operation Sindoor'.
He asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had dispatched a "sister from the same community" as that of Pakistan to retaliate against the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir. This statement was widely interpreted as an affront to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who belongs to the Muslim community.
In response to Shah's comments, Mayawati expressed her outrage on X, stating, "The obscene, uncivilized, and indecent remarks aimed first at the Foreign Secretary and then at the female Army officer are set to undermine the positive atmosphere of enthusiasm and excitement that the nation is experiencing due to the Indian Army's success in 'Operation Sindoor' against Pakistan, which is deeply regrettable and shameful."
She further urged the BJP and the Central Government to take the indecent comments made by a senior Madhya Pradesh minister regarding the Muslim Army spokesperson seriously and to take decisive action against him, to thwart the malicious designs of adversaries and maintain harmony and brotherhood within the country.
The remarks elicited widespread condemnation across political factions and social media channels.
Madhya Pradesh BJP chief V.D. Sharma summoned Shah for a private meeting on Tuesday night. Following this, Shah issued a clarification, asserting that his words had been misinterpreted and taken out of context.
"I have nothing to comment on the judgment of those distorting my remarks. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi has made the nation proud. We honor both sisters. I never meant to offend anyone and extend my sincere apologies," Shah stated post-meeting.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, alongside Wing Commander Vyomika Singh of the Indian Air Force, played a key role in addressing the media during Operation Sindoor — India's decisive military action in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals.
The Opposition Congress also sharply criticized Shah, accusing him of dishonoring not just Colonel Qureshi but the entire armed forces.
Sharing a video clip of Shah's comments, Congress leader Jitu Patwari stated during a press conference in Bhopal, "The courageous daughters of our Army are labeled as sisters of terrorists. This reprehensible statement has been made by MP Minister Vijay Shah. It is an affront to our formidable army."
He demanded Shah's immediate dismissal from the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet, asserting, "If the Chief Minister does not remove Shah, it will be viewed as the state Cabinet endorsing his indecent and communal comments."
Patwari also recalled Shah's previous controversies, pointing out that he had been expelled from the state Cabinet in 2013 for making lewd comments about former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's wife, Sadhna Singh.
